Manwolves of Elban Known among themselves as Worgen, the manwolves are a curious race of bipedal canids that are found only on the western island of Elban. They are genetic uplifts, raised to sentience and an upright form from a species of black wolves. This was done by Fred at the behest of Thorn, who has claimed Elban as a private sanctuary and wished to have helpers that could be trusted in maintaining the woodlands. The Worgen have vastly exceeded Thorns expectations, and he treats them more as favored children than as servants. Oddly, for those in service to the god of Woods and Fields, none of the Worgen are druids. Most often, they are Rangers or simple hunters and gardeners. Those Worgen who wish to travel beyond the confines of Elban are permitted to do so, as Thorn recognizes that mature, freewilled beings must be permitted use of that odd quality or become wild and rebellious. Thus, Thorn has permitted the building of several small port towns, two along the eastern shore, toward the mainland and one out to the western ocean. Those that travel to the mainland are instructed in what little is known of that vast expanse of land, and are typically left ashore a ways north of the island. Unlike the mangey gnoll, Worgen take great care for their appearance. Their thick, dark coats are kept brushed and shiney. They rarely wear more clothing than a pair of short breeches and a woodland cloak, and those more out of utility than modesty. Armor can be a bit of trouble for a worgen, as the added layers of material restrict their fur, which can cause mange and other unwanted problems. Their legs are digitigrade, thus they most often go barefoot, although their paw pads are thick enough that they can tread through most terrain without fear of injury. Stoney ground can give then trouble, though. Most stand about as tall as humans, with the females typically six to eight inches shorter than the males. The claws of their hands are long and sharp enough to be used as weapons, as are their powerful jaws, but most prefer to smith-wrought tools for that purpose. Worgen society tends to be very communal and family oriented. They still call their towns and villages 'packlands' and will be wary of any non-Worgen venturing among them. Those that prove to harbor no ill will, can always find a friendly welcome. As Thorn worries for those who seek travel and adventure, he has asked that Fred and Hydris look out for his Worgen on the mainland and oceans. As Fred keeps no temples or shrines, he has enlisted the assistance of Hest. Thus, Worgen have a standing claim of hospitality at any place dedicated to Hest or Hydris, permitting them a week's lodging and minor healing.
